Awesome Things to Do in Downtown Tampa

If you are coming in a couple of days before your cruise, attending an event at the Tampa Convention Center, or just looking to get away, you will certainly enjoy your visit to downtown Tampa.

TECO Streetcar

The first electric streetcars were in action by 1892 and became an integral part of the community. After WWII, streetcars were replaced by cars and buses and the streetcar service became mostly obsolete. In the early 2000’s, after much advocating and refurbishing, the streetcars started running, again.

The TECO Streetcar line has 11 stops from Ybor City to downtown Tampa, and each stop will connect you to the downtown buzz.

Parking can be tough, and expensive, in the downtown. We typically utilize parking in Ybor City, then take the TECO Streetcar downtown. It’s an unusual way to get around, but it’s so cool!

The TECO Streetcar also connects many of the downtown hotels to Ybor City and the Tampa Convention Center.

Florida Aquarium

I love our Florida Aquarium. A visit to the aquarium ties in very well with other activities in downtown Tampa if you’re only day-trippin’ into town. I recommend 3 hours to visit, spending most of the time staring into the huge, active aquarium window. Benches provided!

The Florida Aquarium gives a great glimpse into the various eco-systems in Florida, and abroad. Conservation and protection of these ecosystems are a focus as you explore the different exhibits.

For the kids, several touch tanks offer a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with sea life. After your indoor visit, let the kids enjoy the popular splash pad!

Pro Tip:

Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, a towel, and swimsuits. The Florida Aquarium has a great changing room to prepare for splash pad fun!

Centro Ybor

Ahhh, Centro Ybor. If you want to feel like you’ve stepped back in time, visiting Centro Ybor will do it. In 1886, Vicente Martinez-Ybor relocated his cigar factory from Key West to this area and it became known as the “First Industrial Town”. Today, Ybor City’s rich history lives on with boutique hotels, unique shopping, dining, and entertainment.

Just outside downtown Tampa, strolling down 7th Avenue feels a bit like walking in the French Quarter, with wrought iron railings on the balconies, an entertainment vibe, and a unique lineup of nightlife. Chickens roam freely and are protected. Ybor City is also the disputed origin of the Cuban sandwich.

Take a walking tour of Ybor City with an experienced, local guide. You’ll see hidden streets and learn about Cuban culture, food, and history.

Columbia Restaurant

During your visit to Ybor City, as mentioned above, make a reservation for lunch or dinner at Florida’s oldest restaurant, the Columbia Restaurant. This is one of the most distinguished restaurants in North America and you won’t be disappointed.

I guarantee that when you return home from your vacation, your friends will ask, “Did you eat at the Columbia?”

Sparkman Wharf

Formerly known as Channelside, Sparkman Wharf has been reimagined as a hip and trendy place to hang out in downtown Tampa, and with good reason. You will find eateries, trivia, yoga, live music, a beer garden, and a waterfront view.

Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park

Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park is a huge green space in the heart of downtown, directly on the Hillsborough River. The park hosts a plethora of events and activities all year long and offers spectacular views of the Tampa skyline.

This urban green space offers 2 splash pads, a playground, dog run, and is conveniently located along the Tampa Riverwalk.

Some of the more popular events hosted in the park include Pirate Fest, River O’Green Fest, Rock the Park, and many more.

Armature Works

Anchored by downtown Tampa and the Hillsborough River, Armature Works is a 73,000-square-foot warehouse that has been restored into a wonderful mixed-use space. In the heart of the Heights District, Armature Works offers dining, entertainment, and a unique event space.

The event calendar practically has something every day, from candle-making to yoga. Grab a drink on the rooftop bar, or enjoy lunch or dinner as part of your Tampa Riverwalk visit.

Glazer Children’s Museum

One of the choice admissions with your CityPASS Tampa Bay is the Glazer Children’s Museum. Bring the entire family and let your imaginations run wild! Big John, the world’s largest Triceratops fossil, is also displayed.

I missed out on this visit when our grandson was here, but he had a blast and his mom gave the Glazer Children’s Museum an enthusiastic thumbs up!

Tampa Riverwalk

Most of the activities in this blog post are located on, or very near, the Tampa Riverwalk. The 2.6-mile-long walkway is ranked one of the best in America for good reasons.

Along the Tampa Riverwalk, you can go for a dolphin sightseeing cruise, take a guided tour of downtown in a street-legal golf cart, or hire the tiki boat for a sunset cruise.

Vast waterfront and city views, dining options, entertainment, events, hotels, museums, theaters, recreation, and more are connected by the Tampa Riverwalk. There is something for everyone, every day.

Boating

What could be better than a day on the water? Huh, I can’t think of anything! Seeing downtown Tampa from the water is a joy, whether you’re taking a water taxi or renting a boat.

Tampa Theater

A few blocks from the river, the Tampa Theater has been hosting audiences for nearly 100 years in the most ornate movie palace in America. Annually, the Tampa Theater presents over 700 events ranging from films to corporate events, comedy, and more. Tours of the theater are also available on select days.

The Tampa Theater is home to the mighty Wurlitzer Theater Pipe Organ, which was installed to accompany silent films when the theater opened in the 1920s. Today, it is played before film screenings and special silent film events.

Straz Center for the Performing Arts

Downtown Tampa is a great place to play during the day, but an even more amazing place to be entertained at night. The Straz Center for the Performing Arts is the premier theater in the Tampa Bay area. Broadway tour companies stop in Tampa all year long presenting shows such as Les Miserables, Mama Mia!, and MJ the Musical, to name a few.

Opera Tampa has had a residency for over 25 years at the Straz Center and the Patel Conservatory provides inspirational performing arts training to students. Plan to get tickets to see a Broadway Show while you’re in town.
