9 Great Tips: Avoid Sunburn At The Beach
Our skin is the largest organ in our bodies and it’s important to take good care of it during our lifetime. Here are 9 great tips to avoid sunburn at the beach.
Avoid Peak Sun Hours
The hottest, most intense sunshine happens between the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. While it is possible to get sunburned outside of these hours, avoiding direct sun mid-day will help reduce the severity of any sunburn.
Going to the beach early is certainly a great way to start your day, usually with fewer people on the beach and calmer weather. Conversely, going later in the day will allow you to see the spectacular sunsets that this area is known for! Don’t miss it!
Apply and Reapply Sunscreen
It is recommended that an SPF of 30 or higher is used to protect yourself from the Florida sun and should be reapplied every 30-45 minutes, or after getting in the water.
Sunscreen Recommendations
Neutrogena SPF 45 – TSA compliant, great for face and body
SunBum – Vegan & Reef Friendly
Panama Jack – For your lips
Bring Your Shade
If you’re driving to Florida, it’s a great idea to bring your shade, if you have room. Save money by not renting a cabana on the beach. Cabanas are limited and may not be available.
Best Beach Shade
Wondershade – My #1 pick, for beach, pool, soccer practices, park concerts, etc.
Pop-up Shade – A popular pick, budget-friendly
Ease Into It
Spending hours on the beach during your first day of vacation is probably not a great idea. Especially if you’re coming from a colder climate and your skin has been covered for months, without sunshine! Take it easy. A couple of hours on the first day is a great starter sesh. Even taking those couple of hours early or late, you’ll still get some color and benefits of being in the sun.
Sun Hats & Sunglasses
Most people don’t consider protecting their scalp during outdoor activities, but it’s vitally important to do so. A wide-brimmed hat offers the best protection, but even a ball cap is helpful if that’s all you have with you.
Sunglasses also help protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun. Also, if you’re at the beach or on the water, the glare and reflection can cause harm to your face and eyes.

Protect your feet
Another area that often gets neglected, is the feet! Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to the tops of your feet, even out walking around, at theme parks, or just sitting on the beach. Nothing is more painful than burned-up feet when you have to put socks and shoes on!
Protective swimwear and clothing
It seems that there are countless brands of SPF clothing out there, so pick your preference. If you’re not keen on rubbing chemicals on your body, wearing rash guard-type clothing while at the beach will offer a great layer of sun protection.
